Although some environmental activists argue that staying close to home is the best way to make green travel (one return trip abroad produces approximately the same amount of carbon emissions that a car no more than a year), there are aspects negative school of thought that too. For example, developing countries depend heavily on tourism for development and carefully managed tourism can help fight poverty and promote growth. Moreover, traveling far from home can provide lasting benefits for education and it can participate in local conservation efforts and education, especially if you are willing to volunteer. Try to ensure that parks and beaches to visit are truly interested in sustainable tourism and to ensure that accommodation is helping the environment by planting trees, using less towels and other water saving, giving them a call and ask them what they do to promote ecologically friendly tourism and sustainable practices .

Camping and house exchange are also great ways to do their small part to make green holiday best for the environment. Another thing you can do is plan easy eco adventure tours to places where you can camp and use the car and the minimum fuel. That kind of green holiday has the added benefit of allowing you to explore the spectacular nature in a sustainable platform.

Creating and Marketing Sustainable Destinations

With the growing trend of sustainability, many destinations are preparing themselves as "green meeting destination. In 2008, increasingly began working with DMOs and CVBS wanted to go green. Not surprisingly, the cities are seeing the green has financial, brand and profit motivation.

I am often asked: What city is greener? The centers are the most sustainable? What hotel properties are stronger on CSR ?

When I answer this question I'm careful to refer to what I know in my own experience. In case of not having direct experience based on the eyes of people and organizations they trust: the certifiers and verifiers, such as ISO 14001, Green Seal, LEED and government agencies .

I am also careful to try to avoid making blanket statements or observations about the brands, including hotel chains. I recently heard someone say "I never had a meeting of green in the properties of the X hotel company. They are not green." I admit I've caught myself saying the same thing. More than once. I have heard many sales representatives to promote the virtues of green chain, and have made numerous site visits frustrated by individual properties that do not meet the image and the promise of enterprise policies presented by salespeople or office. My experience to deal with these situations ?

1. Inform myself of the corporate policies of the CVB's, destinations and hotel chains I'm working with.

2. Ask properties how they are working to achieve these policies on the front lines and talk about my expectations during negotiations.
Observe practice on-site. Trust my own eyes, or those of peers who have experienced these cities, venues and hotels.

3. Contract specific practices and measuring and be willing to be flexible and where the intention to observe all that I can not be in place .

4. Performance on the track and give feedback .

5. Honor Leaders who are taking steps forward on sustainability .
